Kyushu University Hospital is a national general hospital that has grown to its present size through a number of mergers and name changes. Currently, the hospital has 1,275 beds and receives an average of 2,500 outpatients per day.
The new building is 56 metres high, with 11 floors above ground and one underground, with a floor area of approximately 120,000m2 and a total construction cost of 100 billion yen (approximately RMB 6.5 billion).
The building is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 15189 (the standard management system for hospital testing departments).

On 27 January 2016, Kyushu University Hospital was designated by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare as a "Clinical Research Core Hospital" under the Medical Care Act.
The Health and Medical Care Strategy Promotion Act was established to achieve the priority policy "Innovation for Life", which will lead the future of Japan, and is linked to the Japan Medical Research and Development Organization (AMED), which is the command tower that strongly promotes this goal. The Centre is responsible for this area and is a core hospital for clinical research.
